Kane scoops BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund Award (AND David Downton sketch)
Okay, so it’s not strictly hot-off-the-press, as it was announced Wednesday (or Monday, if you’re a Vogue subscriber, comme moi. Oops), but congrats to uber-modest, uber-influential Christopher Kane for scooping the second BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund Award. AND he got a beautiful commemorative illustration by David Downton – of which I am so jealous!
Sponsored by a consortium of fashion-enabling businesses, the £200k award means a serious adrenalin boost to an already high-energy fashion label; since bursting onto the scene at his Central St Martins MA debut, Kane has a proven ability to create and drive trends through his own label, as well as injecting new meaning into Versace’s Versus, for which he is creative director.
With his sister/muse/partner Tammy Kane and his team, Kane will benefit from a package of support coordinated by the BFC, including a business mentoring programme, to help one of the UK’s brightest fashion stars build his business and acheive long-term success. The man made us reconsider where neon sits in our wardrobe was chosen for the award from among eight fantastic finalists – even the fact that they were all such strong candidates (who all work so collaboratively as a supportive network) is hugely encouraging indication of the upward trajectory of the UK’s designer fashion industry.
Speaking to the BFC, Christopher commented: ‘I am absolutely delighted to be this year’s winner of the BFC /Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. It is such an honour to receive this accolade especially when I have such huge respect for all the nominees. The prize enables us to implement our strategic vision for the Christopher Kane business going forward. We would like to thank everyone involved in making this decision and all those who have helped establish our business. We would especially like to thank our team who work incredibly hard every day and without whom none of this would be possible.’ For more comment, check out this exclusive LFWTV film with Kane himself, as well as members of the judging panel.
Already one of the most sought-after tickets at London Fashion Week, let’s hope this accolade keeps Christopher Kane’s show in the UK capital for a few seasons yet – at least until I get the call to say I’m in the running for a ticket. Maybe I could produce his website in exchange for a golden ticket (*dreams*)?!
The Christopher Kane AW11 catwalk show takes place during London Fashion Week; Monday 21 February at 11.45am.
