Have you recently made a film dripping in fashion sensibilities? If so, we’d love to consider it for our Fashion Popcorn session at Sheffield Doc/Fest on June 11th.

From Mango and Adidas, to Henry Holland and Burberry, everyone’s doing it.  Fashion Popcorn is looking for exciting and innovative films and video content that explores the relationship between fashion and documentary film, to kickstart discussions between delegates and our panellists – the Fashion Popcorn family trio and Sarah Graham, digital marketing manager at publishing giant Natmags.

We’ll be exploring what makes a fashion documentary film, and asking whether it’s  just extended advertising for a clothing brand. We’ll be looking at how documentary filmmakers engaging with fashion brands, whether it is possible for fashion documentary filmmakers to keep an independent, critical voice, and if there is there more scope for experimentation and artistic expression. As well as a whole host of other thoughts and observations which might crop up!

Selected films will be included in a short screening of content exploring the fashion/documentary theme, followed by a series of quick workshops and an open debate. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences and opinions about engaging with fashion brands as a documentary filmmaker.

We are very excited as , following the event, Fashion Popcorn will produce  a report indicating the future of fashion’s creative relationship with film and how this might fit within the digital landscape. ‘Watch this space’, as they say!

Films must be no longer than 3 mins long and could simply explore, reference or be inspired by documentary, it does not need to be an actual documentary. Short extracts, trailers and promos under three mins are welcome. We are also happy to present any online content that explores this theme.

Please submit by sending a weblink to hello@fashionpopcorn.com with a brief description about the film/content. Or alternatively send a DVD to: Fashion Popcorn, c/o 90c Stamford Hill, London, N16 6XS. Deadline: 31st May 2011

Films submitted by filmmakers attending Sheffield Doc/Fest will be prioritised for selection, with filmmakers invited to attend Fashion Popcorn and contribute to the discussion.

Fashion Popcorn will also be asking for thoughts, ideas, opinions and comment about fashion and documentary inbefore and after the event, to help build the report. People will be able to contribute and discuss online through the Fashion Popcorn website, our Facebook page and Twitter (although bear with – remember this is a lurve project). More details to come.
