Snaps to the sisters: on set with Shaniqwa Jarvis, Alex Brownswell and adidas Originals
Shaniqwa Jarvis. Idiosyncratic, energetic and inspiring, she’s one of most exciting photographers on the circuit – and we’d say one with the most integrity. She is who she is, and we love her for it. Two years ago she was telling Mark Ronson to ‘only spin his old tunes – none of his new crap.’ at the launch of the London leg of her photographic exhibition Charming Man. She’s known him for a while: he didn’t take it personally.
Her latest project? Photographer on the all-girl crew for adidas Originals’ SS13 campaign, capturing a series of interpretations of female friendships starring street cast models sporting cool adidas Original garb and candy-hued locks by none other than BLEACH London founder Alex Brownsell.
‘I was excited to work on this project with this myriad crew of talented women.’ says the Brooklyn-based photographer; ‘I was excited to showcase a genuine crew of women… who are real friends and document them during their day. There is something special about female friendships and being able to capture this special bond is exciting to me.’
‘It was a rare opportunity for women to create an all-female eye on beauty and fashion.’ adds Alex; ‘The feminine energy that was generated was really strong – it felt really girly and fun and it was nice to shoot in the girls’ flat on a Sunday morning with the TV on and loads of tea and toast. Shaniqwa also gives off a really positive vibe which reflects on the whole team. I was mostly excited to put colour on the girls’ hair as well as style them because it brought together two elements of my profession that I don’t often get to do together on shoots.’
Plucked off the street, hair done by Alex of BLEACH London, dressed up in slick sports-vibe clothes and shot by none other than Shaniqwa Jarvis? Certainly sounds like our kind of Sunday morning!
